Amihan vs Habagat: When Is the Best Time to Dive in Coron?

If you’re planning a diving trip to the Philippines, one question always comes up: when is the best time to dive in Coron?

The answer comes down to two essential words you need to know: Amihan and Habagat.

These two seasonal wind patterns, unique to the Philippine archipelago, directly influence

visibility, sea conditions, and your overall diving experience.

Understanding these seasons means optimizing your trip and diving in the best possible conditions.

Amihan: The Best Season for Diving in Coron

Amihan refers to the northeast monsoon. It typically runs from November to May, and it is without a doubt the most popular season for diving in the Philippines, especially in Coron.

Why is Amihan ideal for diving?

  • Generally calm seas along the west coast of Busuanga

  • Excellent underwater visibility (often 15 to 30 meters)

  • Lower humidity and pleasant temperatures

  • Stable conditions, perfect for wreck exploration

This is when Coron’s world-famous wreck diving sites truly shine.

The shipwrecks in the bay benefit from clearer waters and more predictable conditions, making it ideal for underwater photography, exploration, and training.

If you’re looking for the best time to dive in Coron, Amihan is the top choice.

Habagat: A Wilder Season… But Still Worth It

Habagat, or the southwest monsoon, typically lasts from June to October. While often considered less favorable, it still offers some interesting advantages.

What to expect during Habagat:

  • Rougher seas in certain areas

  • Possibility of tropical rain and storms

  • Reduced visibility at times

  • Limited access to some dive sites depending on conditions

However, it’s not all negative

Some dive sites remain protected, especially within Coron Bay, allowing for year-round diving.

Tourist numbers are lower, which means:

  • fewer divers on the sites

  • a more exclusive experience

  • sometimes better opportunities to observe marine life

Marine Life: Does Season Matter?

Unlike many other destinations, marine biodiversity in Coron is present all year round.

Whether you visit during Amihan or Habagat, you can expect to see:

  • abundant tropical fish

  • nudibranchs and macro life

  • moray eels, scorpionfish, and lionfish

  • schools of trevallies and barracudas

After more than 80 years underwater, the wrecks have become true artificial reefs, attracting dense and diverse marine life.

Which Season Should You Choose?

Choose Amihan if you want:

  • the best overall conditions

  • optimal visibility

  • a smooth, predictable trip

Choose Habagat if you’re looking for:

  • fewer crowds

  • a more adventurous experience

  • potentially lower prices

Our Recommendation for Diving in Coron

For a first-time experience or an optimized diving trip, we strongly recommend the period from December to May, right in the middle of Amihan.

However, if you’re flexible and adventurous, Habagat can also offer some great surprises.

In any case, Coron remains a year-round diving destination, known for its legendary wrecks, rich biodiversity, and stunning landscapes.
